Tell us a little bit about yourself! Where are you from, what are you majoring in, what are your interests, etc. etc. I'm especially interested in your language background--what languages do you speak?
I'm Talinn Phillips and I'm originally from Lancaster, OH. I'm married and I have a little boy named Jack who will be 12 weeks old tomorrow (the answer to "what did you do on your summer vacation?"). I've been in Athens for 11 years now and I'm feeling quite nostalgic about the start of the last fall quarter.
I teach rhetoric and composition courses in the English Department and my specialty is working with non-native speakers of English. Before I came to English I taught Linguistics and ESL classes. I've studied quite a few languages (Latin, French, Spanish, German, Vietnamese, Arabic) but I'm only competent in English. I really enjoy studying new languages even if I'll never have time to master them.
Outside of work, I love cooking and traveling, although I haven't been able to do much of either in the last few months. I'm looking forward to taking Jack to visit his Australian family over winter break. I've also started cooking more now that 1) the idea of food no longer potentially triggers nausea and 2) I'm getting enough sleep to focus on something for more than 30 seconds.
Fall has always been my favorite season and if you're going to experience fall, then Athens is a great place for it. I love it when the ginkgo leaves turn bright gold and carpet the sidewalk in front of Alden. I'm looking forward to the changing leaves and all of the fall scents. Also, I must admit that I'm excited about the new season of TV--30 Rock, Grey's, The Office, and Top Gear.
Have a great quarter,
Dr. Phillips

ReplyDeleteThe Introduction of Me
I was born in Ft. Myers, Florida but I currently live at home in Youngstown. I like it even though the drive from Athens is around 4 hours. The only good characteristic of Youngstown is that it is directly in the middle between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, which are prime concert locations. My major is Advertising Journalism and I am in currently in my junior year. I initially came to school perusing broadcast journalism but changed it because I felt I wanted to write advertisements everyday rather than simply read the news. Ohio University has so far been a good home for me and I become more and more excited each day. My plans for right now after graduation is to get an advertising job somewhere on the west coast. I hope within the next two years I can get an internship to a firm somewhere in a big city. My dream job would to be a creative director for my own advertising agency in California, but for now I am content with becoming a copywriter after college. I am interested in writing and directing my own television commercials and bringing a different edge to the mundane ones we are overexposed to. My native language is English but I took four years of Spanish in high school and continue to pursue the language. I recently became in contact with the Rosetta Stone program so my goal over the year is to become as fluent as I can. My past experience in writing has mainly been for school but I do write occasionally in my leisure time. I wrote for the High School newspaper and wrote for different news outlets here on campus. I like creating stories and pictures with words and find it enjoyable to apply my skills in my schoolwork.

I was born and raised in Eaton, OH which is a little farm town right between Dayton and Cincinnati. I graduated high school in 2005 and went to Miami University for 3 semesters before I joined the Navy. In the Navy I deployed twice to the Middle East, once to Kuwait for 6 months and to Iraq for 7 months. While I was in the Navy my primary job was flying UAV's for route clearance and overhead security.
I just got out of the military in January 2011 and started attending OU in the spring quarter of this year. My major is exercise physiology and I am considered a junior. Once I am done with school I would like to be a personal trainer and eventually work my way up to owning my own gym. I don't have very much experience writing outside of the schoolwork and notes we do in classes. I am taking this class to learn how to write more professionally and eventually maybe publish articles in magazines dealing with my job when I am done with school.

Introduction of Me

My name is Elizabeth Mault and i love nonsense.
I am 22 years old and a senior at Ohio University. My major is Sociology/criminology. I grew up in a small river town in southern Ohio called Portsmouth, but for the last 4 years I have lived in the beautiful city of Athens. I come from a very liberal family who has a very strong background in the armed forces. I am no exception to that tradition. I am currently a senior in the Army ROTC program here at OU and a member of the Ohio Army National Guard. Even though it absorbs my life, I have learned to "embrace the suck" and plan on making a career in the active duty Army upon graduating in the spring.
Besides the army and school, my family and friends are a HUGE part of my life. I am the oldest of 3 children. My 'original' baby brother Luke, who is 21 is currently in Afghanistan with an engineer and field artillery platoon, however he is a junior at OU as well and despite his absence he is still continuing his education online. I am VERY proud of my little brother. My six year old sister is my only sister and my perpetual best friend. Her name is Reece and she is every bit of perfect. Finally my baby brother Sammy, he is two, he LOVES dinosaurs and cars. He makes my day 100 times better even when everything seems bleak.
As for me, I am constantly busy with school and army junk. I don't have a lot of leisure time, but I like it that way. When I do find time to relax I love to read. I'll read nearly anything. I love beer and wine too. I have a boyfriend, and I guess he's okay, he makes me smile and motivates me to do the best I can and keeps me somewhat sane. I don't speak any languages other than English and even then I often mispronounce words such as "color". I often loathe the fact that being from southern Ohio means you have an uncanny ability to sound ridiculous, but I've learned to tame it.
Hello everyone!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Brittany McIntire and I’m from Athens, OH. Strangely enough, it has been quite a bittersweet experience attending a college in my own hometown. I’ve grown up in these hills and these brick covered streets that I would later come to recognize as my educational gateway. I have created and collected most of my life memories from this quaint town that many call Ohio Univeristy.
Now, it is my senior year and I will be receiving my Bachelors degree with the Science of Communication, which is where the bittersweet emotions have made its appearance. Where did all of this time go? Nonetheless, it has been a wonderful journey towards a future that I hope will be fitting for my hopes and dreams.
A few things that I particularly enjoy doing in any free time is traveling, cooking, hiking, and spending time with my family. I do not speak fluently in any other language beyond English, but I recently spent the summer in Florence, Italy where I immersed myself into its beautiful culture and language. It was an unforgettable experience and I hope to expand my knowledge on its history in the future.
Introduction.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Ellen Heidemann and I'm from Cincinnati, OH. I love where I live mostly due to my friends and family. They make Cincinnati home for me. I loved living in Athens for the past three years but I always love going home to see my family and friends.
I'm a senior majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I really enjoy my major and like learning new things about it every day. I want to continue my education by going to grad school in Speech Pathology next year. This time last year I didn't know what I would do if I didn't get into grad school for Speech but after this summer I now know my second path in life. This summer I was a camp counselor for kids and adults with special needs. If I don't get into speech for grad school I still want to go to grad school but in Social Work. I truly loved my job this summer and can't wait to go back to it next summer!
In my free time, I like to do what everyone else does and hang out with their friends. I also like to cook and play sports when I have time. But most of all I love to relax when I finally get the free time. Watching TV for me is a huge relaxer. I can watch literally any show from game shows to reality tv.
I've studied a few languages recently. I've studied American Sign Language and Spanish for awhile but I'm not fluent in either what so ever.
My name is David Poole and I am from a small town call Middleport, OH. It is about 30mins southeast of Athens. I am not quite a townie but pretty close to it. The Village of Middleport is pretty small, since I have lived there we have went from having four stop lights to currently having two.
ReplyDeleteI am a senior majoring in Athletic Training but due to the changing of my major three times since I have been at Ohio University I am behind and will not be graduating this spring. I am currently with the Ohio University Football Team and was able to go to New Mexico this past weekend with them. After I complete my undergrad in Athletic Training I plan on attending school for a master’s degree in Athletic Training.
In my free time I like to hang out with my friends. I am pretty active. I like to play numerous sports and work out when I can find the time. Being a full time student and having clinicals for twenty plus hours a week makes it hard to have some down time. I like to listen to music and just lay on my couch or bed seems to be a good stress and relaxer for me here lately.
I do not speak any other language than English; although, I did take Spanish for two years in high school but I cannot remember much from it.

ReplyDeleteHello all,
ReplyDeleteI'm Will Burchfield, Junior video production major. I'm originally from a small town called van wert ohio, it's part of the flatlands of ohio with plenty of corn. I'm also fairly unilingual. I only speak english, I took german in High school but that was awhile ago and most of it is long gone from my mind.
I spent summer in L.A working an internship. It was probably the best summer I've ever had. I made several important contacts and got a lot of experience in my field. Plus in my downtime I was able to do all sorts of things that simply aren't available in Ohio. However I'm very glad to be back in Athens, Must admit I really missed this place
Hey, Doods and Lady Doods,
ReplyDeleteMy name is David Thompson. I am a Junior this year and am majoring in Video Production in the School of Media Arts & Studies at Scripps College. While I am very interested in video and cinema, I am gearing my education so as to give myself the opportunity to one day direct the cinematic sequences in video games.
Movies and video game hold a lot of my interests, but I also spend my free time playing guitar and exercising (I love to run). I hang out with friends when I can, but I'm usually too busy because I recently acquired a seat on the executive board of AVW Productions and it has taken up most of my time (though it has taken much of my time in a good way).
Some more about me is that I have a Mom who lives in Arizona, my dad lives here in Ohio, my sister is in northern Ohio and I go to school at Ohio University. So, basically, I have 3 other family members and no one lives together. I think that is funny. I also have a dog named Zap but she lives with my Mom in Arizona, I miss her sometimes.
My language pool is very shallow. I know how to speak and read English, and I took enough Spanish to be able to read it easily, but that's about it. I am a slow reader, as well. So, even though I enjoy reading, I barely have time to. I do, however, turn the captions on my television and on my video games so I can read what is being said, which is helpful, I believe.
I currently live with my Dad in Columbus, Ohio when I am not attending school (usually in the Summer and over Winter break) but I have lived in many different places. I suppose the one place I "grew up" in was Marengo, Ohio (a small town around 30 miles north of Columbus), but I've grown up a little more every where I've lived.
Well, that is me in the tiniest nutshell. Thank you.
David Thompson
Introduction
ReplyDeleteI'm an Mechanical Engineering major currently in my Junior year, here at OU. I enjoy playing video games, drawing (though i'm not very good), surfing the web, and running. I've lived in Athens for the past 11 years, so I guess you can consider me a towny. I was born in Indiana and lived their for 5 years before moving to Texas for 4 years. I tend to enjoy reading however I am unfortunately a rather picky reader, and find it hard to keep reading a book if it doesn't fall into a rather narrow field of fantasy/magic. I waste most of my free time surfing the web or playing video games, and every now and then try to do something constructive like pick up my trumpet from high school, practice drawing, or learn to program.
I just recently turned 21, and still hang out with my friends from high school. Out side of this group I tend to prefer to remain quite. I don't really go to big parties on campus. I enjoy the quite of the country, and don't particularly like large cities, most likely because I tend to be somewhat paranoid, over silly things. This is probably due to the fact that I have an overactive imagination. Which tends to jump to conclusions on its own.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Allison Nicholl. This is my senior year at OU and my major is Psychology. After graduating, I plan on going to an accelerated nursing program to receive my BSN and eventually my masters after I graduate.
I am from the outskirts of Springfield, Ohio which is in-between Columbus and Dayton. I have a love-hate relationship with this town. I love it because that’s where all of my family and friends are, but hate it because you have to go out of the city to go shopping and so forth. I enjoy playing soccer, basketball, and softball. I like to make time out to play at least one of the sports once a week, though it is extremely difficult with a busy college life. During the summer when I wasn’t completing homework for the online classes I took, or floating in my newly built pool, I participated in CO-ed soccer and softball teams outside of my hometown. It was fun meeting new people and doing a little bit of networking..
My native language is English and though I have learned French throughout my high school career and 2 years in college, I would definitely say I am not fluent in it. I would love to be but I feel like I would have to experience going to a french speaking country to better my skills.
Hey everyone,
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to see such an eclectic group of people in this class. I look forward to getting to know all of you and hope you had a relaxing and magnificent summer. My name is Dave Polster and I am a Junior Music Production major here at OU. I'm originally from Cleveland, Ohio, spending most of my youth in the eastern inner-ring suburb, Cleveland Heights. As my major might imply, I am deeply rooted in music and tend to listen to at least one album a day (ideally I'd like to make that one NEW album a day, but there aren't enough hours in the day as it is). I've been working in the audio industry since the age of 14 and have been fortunate enough to hear and see some pretty cool things in my life thus far. As of late, recording music has been my passion. I am not a fantastic musician myself, but I love the collaborative process of forming a record and also enjoy the technical aspects of song making.
I spent the majority (2 months) of this summer in Ashland, KY (and around the Ohio Valley area) working as an intern with a live sound/stage/lighting company. It was a fun experience, although I found myself missing my friends and family from back home terribly. All in all, I gained great experience and learned how to frequently work with groups of people who I had not met prior to the first day of work. After the summer ended, I took all the money I had saved and finally purchased a car after years of futile attempts. I ended up with a 94 Honda Accord which is by no means a fancy car, but after two years of lugging my heavy audio equipment all across campus, I feel lucky to have any mode of semi-reliable transportation.
My grandmother was born in Havana, Cuba and therefore is fluent in Spanish. That beings said, my mother, aunt, and sister are all relatively fluent in Spanish. I, being the black sheep in the family, never picked up on the language although I can typically understand Spanish conversations, I just have no means of responding. (That being said, I've overheard a lot of secrets that no one thinks I can understand…). I never enrolled in any AP English courses in high school. I'm currently in a American sign language class right now, although I'm not sure if that would be considered a 'language' in the technical meaning.
Thanks for taking the time to read a little but about me. I'm kind of a weirdo. I look forward to working with all of you this quarter.
Dave
Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Dennis Fulton. First thing you should know about me is that I hate being called Dennis the Menace. I've been called it all my life for over 19 years and a man can only handle being referenced to a crappy cartoon for so long.
I am 19 years old and am currently studying journalism at Ohio University. I hope to get involved in advertising when I graduate. I haven't given much thought as to who/what I will be in the future, but I would like to imagine my future self as a 21st century Don Draper.
I'm a standard guy with standard intersts. I like playing video games, messing around on the internet, swimming, and I watch way to much tv. My big interest is movies. I watch movies all the time and I retain dialogue to a creepy degree. It reaches the point where I can put on a movie and recite a 5 minute long monologue. Really creeps out the people around me.
I grew up in Fairfield, CT. It was a boring town filled only with white people and trees. Its one redeeming factor was that it was within driving distance of Boston and NYC. Two bigger and better places to be.
I studied french from 7th grade all the way to sophmore year of college. I am proficient enough to show off to friends, but not proficient enough to live in France. Apparently, it is hard enough to live in France even if you can speak french fluently. I try to maintain my knowledge by watching movies with french subtitles, but all it really accomplishes is distracting the other people who are watching as well.
I hope that this class we share together will be a fun one.
Dennis
Hello All ... My name is Chelsea Kovak and I am a senior majoring in organizational communication with a business minor and a sales certificate.
ReplyDeleteI am the President of The Ralph & Luci Schey Sales Centre here on campus and it is the greatest experience I have had in college. It does seem to take up quite a bit of time but I love every second of it.
I took about 7 years of scattered Spanish and still can hardly speak a sentence! However, I do enjoy other cultures regardless of the fact I have never been outside of the U.S. and Canada. I spent my summer doing an internship in San Francisco which was a very international mix.
My absolute passions in life consist of dogs, music and sports. For my 21st birthday this past August I held a fundraiser for the ASPCA and made it to just over $800, I'm a huge Cleveland sports fan and I enjoy just about all music besides country.
Looking forward to the rest of this quarter with you all.
Chelsea Kovak
