Spend a few minutes blogging about what you've learned so far in your research. What kinds of claims do you think you can make about writing in your field? You might also find it helpful to read other students' responses, even if they are from different fields.

What I know so far for writing a screenplay is that a screenplay is a construction with many complicated elements. It's not as easy as coming up with a story in mind. First of all, the format of the screenplay must be correct. Otherwise, the producers or production companies will throw the screenplays away when the first time they read it. Second, the structure of the screenplay must consider the screening time when the movie has finished. The structure must obey the principle to write a story, such as background, inciting incident, trying to solve trouble, fails, find another way, climax and DNM. A good script must obey this structure to make the story interesting. In addition, the script writers need to be aware of the genre they are writing, and their target audience, because the words. conversation in the screenplay is depending on the film genre and target audience.
ReplyDeleteAnother stuff I've learned is that a script is a different concept with a story. Yes, the script is based on story, but script needs to fit its own writing requirement such as format, structure, storyline and so forth to make it shootable. Also, some script writers need to consider the restriction of the real production phase. For example, the location is about a very luxurious hotel, but the budget of the production is low, the script writers need to change their location to a cheap place to make it shootable. Because script is the transmission between words and screen, the writers need to consider more reality situation rather than a story writer.
All in all, writing a script is totally different with writing an academic paper. There are too many points to pay attention to, in order to finish a good script.

An investigator must prepare himself for the interrogation. It can be the difference between success or failure. The interrogator must prepare himself on every detail of the crime and the person being questioned. He should be familiar with the persons age, occupation, hobbies, aliases, marital status, income, etc. He must know every detail of the crime; did he enter the front or back? Was a prop used, which one? What was stolen? Could this house be targeted, and why?
ReplyDeleteWhen the interrogator enter the room he should immediately take keen notice to the suspects demeanor. Is he nervous? Scared? Relaxed? Angry? Sad? This should guide the questioning into its appropriate direction. The investigator needs to take notice to any changes of the suspects behavior and ask himself what could have changed his behavior?
Important to briefly read them their miranda rights, follow the law.
Body language is important to notice during an interview. Could he be lying? Is he trying to create an image or is he just recalling one.
Probation officers must meet many court-imposed deadlines which contributes to heavy workloads and extensive paperwork. When referring to the job of a probation officer the extensive paperwork includes, case notes, court sheets, motions, warrants and a lengthy report known as a PSI (Presentence Investigation Report). The PSI report is very important in the sense that it helps the judge determine whether or not the person being convicted goes to jail or is allowed to remain free on probation and also helps the probation officer to decide the level of supervision and conditions for the offender. It contains information about the offender, the offense, and the offenders personal history. Every time a probation officer and their assigned offender and/or offenders family member meet or have a conversation over the phone, email, however it may be, they must document it.
ReplyDeleteAside from all of the documentations, a probation officer must provide a trusting relationship with their offenders. They need to thoroughly examine their behaviors in order to help in the rehabilitation process. Probation officers and social services departments team up to provide the necessary counseling, educational, employment and housing opportunities.
A probation officers main priority is to ensure that the offenders are living a law-abiding life and to make sure that they dont return to that lifestyle.
Working around a funeral home for the past couple of years has taught me a lot about my future employment. This profession takes on a very involved and personal type of communication that must be done in a manner that is both direct and respectable. Conversing with a family that is going through one of the hardest events in their life can be difficult, but with years of experience the skill can be obtained. Speaking is the dominate form of communication in the mortuary business only because it is more intimate and personal. Prior to this assignment I knew very little about the writing that took place in the business. Upon investigating I realized that there is writing that takes place and some of it was in front of my face the whole time.
ReplyDeleteSome of the writing is for the public to read such as obituaries and each funeral’s pamphlet of the deceased. The other writing that takes place is in private between the family and the funeral director. This can be when arrangements are made, certain passages to be read, or even an exchange of emails to make specific requests. The final piece of writing that is used is all the documents that come along a death. There is of course the death certificate which is filled out half by the doctor that confirms the passing, and the other half is by the funeral director. There are burial permits and vault company papers that need to be addressed. If there are special circumstances where bodies need transported from airports or out of town morgues even more paperwork is required.
Overall, writing is used constantly in this line of work. The public pieces that many will read are an uncommon type of writing that is filled with sympathy and hope. It is rare to see this combination of genre in any other line of work. People are still in a grieving state when we meet and we must by aware and courteous to that. Behind the scenes, the paperwork is important business that must be taken seriously. All papers must be documented precisely and kept record of. These two parts creates a unique balance between being delicate while at the same time operating a business.
After three years in my field, multiple jobs as a photojournalist, and marinating such close relationships with my classmates, what I have learned so far while constructing my professional discourse report is of no surprise. Writing is not an extremely important tool in my field. The biggest known use of writing is the captioning of images. While many may think that it is just a few quick sentences, most image captions follow a strict format. Who, what when, where, why, and how must all be answered in a photos caption. Many of those questions must also be addressed in the captions first sentence. The first sentence is often indirectly passive as well.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, Captions often follow the AP Style Handbook. This handbook is often know as the “journalist’s bible”. Journalists follow this book when it comes to spelling, punctuation appreciations and special uses. Correct grammar is extremely vital to an images caption. This format along with the AP Style must also be used in a way that involves no personal opinion at all. As a respectable journalist one must keep their our thoughts out of their writing unless it is an opinion piece.
I have also learned the importance of correctly writing out blog posts. Photojournalists often blog pictures with words describing experiences, how to’s and personal thoughts on the work they have done. This is obliviously very different then writing a caption, so it is sometimes difficult for some to get their words out after being to finely tuned to withhold their opinions. In addition to blogging, communication is the key to many photojournalism jobs. Just being able to write a properly formatted and addressed email can go a long way. This is something that many often forget about when it comes down to speaking with a potential employer.

I have learned a lot about writing in the field of Wildlife conservation biology. One of the main types of writing is the research paper; this is the paper that will be presented for publishing. By being published, a person’s work can be made public. Before being published, other people in this field will review this paper and then write their own review to discredited or support the research. Both of these forms of writing are very important because this is a way to get someone’s research out to where it can be used to help someone else’s research or protect a habitat that is home to an endangered species.
ReplyDeleteAnother important form of writing is if a researcher needs to write to receive a grant; without the grant then there is no chance of them ever doing their research. There might also be the need for permission for something; one example is to be on someone’s land, which in this case a research might right to the landowner for permission and possible write up an agreement about what their agreement.
There are many other types of writing in this field but these are the important ones. As the plant biologist said in the film without these a person does not exist.
Practicing professional writing in nursing has built me a strong framework for what it means to write professionally in Nursing. I have actually charted information that I have assessed in a hospitals during clinical rotations, this information can be used in a court of law against me so I am continually stressed the importance of perfection. What I have learned about the professional discourse report itself is that there are several aspects of professional writing one needs to consider that will not only develop a well structured paper but also provide a better understanding about how each person’s respective profession writes. Aspects such as, tone of voice, form of communication, genre, and the audience to consider. I think I have also taken into consideration the milieu, environment, or context in which the writing takes place. I think this also plays a vital role in our professional communication and somewhat structures the way we chose to communicate interprofessionally. All writings in nursing are legal documents; perfection is vital to hold up in the court of law and must be viewed as such.
ReplyDeleteWriting in the hospitality industry is extremely important in order for the business to stay successful. There are different kinds of reports used, paperwork filled out, and a great amount of note taking that takes place on the job. Good writing is essential because the employee that takes your place after your shift needs to be aware of the incidents that may have occurred and what overall has been taking place. Unclear notes or reports could leave supervisors and/or managers frustrated having to track that person down. Writing in this field is a vital aspect that contributes to the service that the guests receive.
ReplyDeleteI have learned that there really is not all that much that I can get for both my major and my career goals. No matter what I look for, the only real professional writings that people can universally see is journal articles and theses from students, which are not readily available to the public, and they aren't always good in either location, though the journal usually offers better quality writing. We in our field are more opted toward visual presentations and demonstrations. I would like to provide examples of this from the ITEA journal, but they're funny about copyrights, and I'm not good enough at computers to find loopholes. I've seen more content than before, and I've enjoyed reading it, but I'm not sure that it could necessarily apply to this assignment, so it will be tied in somehow.
ReplyDeleteI had the chance to learn a great deal about some of the genres and styles of writing in my field while working on my professional discourse report. There are many interesting types of documents and arguments to explore in the world of video production. One thing that would surprise most people is that when many filmmakers are writing, they are more interesting in persuading clients (producers/production companies/potential funders) than just a movie audience. Sure, when designing or writing a script, you are trying to appeal to an audience in the form of the viewers, but I think more about how I am going to fit a narrative or piece of work to a specific company. Having a script is ok, but selling a script is the main goal.
ReplyDeleteAs a result, filmmakers must also familiarize themselves with a number of documents that are used often to convey information-- and this is very important-- in a concise way. Producers are busy people, and if your project proposals are too wordy or don't convey your message well then you risk them misunderstanding you or simply tossing your work in the garbage. In this field, professionals expect people to not waste their time if they want to be taken seriously. And that's a way of thinking that I've begun to grow attached to. It's kind of liberating to know that if you're talented and honestly work to save people time, they will want to continue working with you. Likewise, you can expect people to not eat up your time or attention if they want it. Pulled punches are fewer and far between in the industry, which means that you have to learn what makes you marketable and work hard to improve upon that.
The good news is that if you are good at marketing yourself, there seems to be no limit to what kind of projects you can attach yourself to. In conclusion, this line of work features a heavy emphasis on persuasion. If you want to succeed, you have to convince people that your worthy-- be it through your talent, organization or simply because your fun to work with.
In researching and analyzing the different genres that those in my profession use I have learned much in what it takes to write a clear trip plan. I have not had a lot of experience in the area so it was good for me and very interesting to analyze that specific genre. Seeing different examples of trip plans showed me that there isn't much variance when it comes to content or even the way it is written. The sentences were shorter and to the point. This way things don't get over looked by a bored reader.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience at Hocking College I did a bit of writing for Outdoor Pursuits. I always considered myself a good writer. I have learned through my experiences at OU that I have a lot to learn when it comes to writing a professional letter or proposals. The style of writing is very specific. I look forward to having the opportunity to write the documents that I have been studying.

While investigating rhetoric in criminology/criminal justice I learned that the importance of writing in this field is beyond what I expected. I learned that rhetoric in this field can range from a lot in the criminology aspect in forms of articles, books or even lesson plans for classes. The criminal justice side is less writing, but a lot more note taking, communication via letters and email, reports, evaluations and more. The most important writing in criminal justice from my interviews came to be case management reports, in which a detective fills out a descriptive time line of their investigation.
ReplyDeleteThe importance of this writing varies depending on the degree of the case, and also varies in length. The case management reports are very important because if they are written wrong or lack detail, the defense attorney can easily attack them, and the case can be lost or thrown out. Case management reports can also reach all the way to the files of the Supreme Court in some cases. While learning of the importance of case management reports, I also discovered rhetoric comes in other ways as well.
